Berengaria Jewel Theft
Queen of HeartsThe Berengaria Jewel Theft was an unresolved pair of jewelry thefts aboard RMS Berengaria during its crossing of the Atlantic Ocean: Princess Promila’s ruby was stolen, followed by a woman’s diamond ring. The missing jewels and the failure to identify the thief later made the episode a precedent in speculation about another burglary.
The Two Thefts
The thefts involved two different pieces of jewelry and occurred in sequence. Stella Brightwell recalls that a ruby was stolen first and a diamond ring afterward. The evidence does not identify the ring’s owner or establish who took either jewel.
Search and Uncertainty
As passengers left the ship, they were searched for the missing items. Darcy O’Mara later confirmed that the search had found nothing; neither the ruby nor the ring was recovered. He also confirmed that Princess Promila was genuine, answering the concern that the woman associated with the ruby might have been an impostor. The failed search left the thefts unresolved, and Darcy said he did not expect the jewels to have been found.
Later Significance
The thefts resurfaced during discussion of the murder of Cy Goldman and a missing candlestick. Stella proposed that a single burglar might be responsible for the candlestick as well, recalling the earlier Berengaria crimes and wondering whether the same thief had followed them. That connection remained a suspicion, not a demonstrated link. Georgiana Rannoch noted the irony that Stella herself raised an episode that could draw suspicion toward her, while finding it difficult to reconcile Stella’s public success and ties to Cy Goldman with the risks of a jewel thief’s life. The old thefts thus supplied a possible pattern, but did not identify a culprit in either case.
